Cross 2

Snow white and dragon crossbreeding

Purpose: The second deliberate outcross to begin the program to restore the snow white phenotype.

Male (Gandalf):

  • Bought from a big box store during February 2023 as part of the initial stock.

  • Strain: Snow White

  • Relevant genes. Some are assumptions, indicated with italics. Although their decedents strongly support the claims:

    • Base body color: Blond (bb)

    • Magenta: likely homozygous (MM)

    • European Blau: (rr)

    • Stoerzbach: (ss)

Female (Female #2):

  • Bought from a big box store during February 2023 as part of the initial stock.

  • Strain: Unknown but maybe some type of dragon.

  • Relevant genes. Some are assumptions, indicated with italics. Although their decedents strongly support the claims:

    • Base body color: Gray (BB)

    • Magenta: likely a non-carrier (mm)

    • European Blau: (RR)

    • Stoerzbach: (SS)

Crossbreeding results with a snow white and dragon guppy

Offspring:

  • Born: June 4, 2023

  • Brood Size: 26

    • 17 with deformities, possibly from a stressed birth. These were not counted in the distributions below.

    • 4 healthy males

    • 5 healthy females

  • Primarily one phenotype but possibly two:

    • All males had red tails with black speckling. They might be a few males that had a higher spread of iridescence but I am not 100% sure. In any case, it is not super strong and I will treat them as guppies that do not express stoerzbach. The females looked similar to Cross 1 but with a little more blue.

  • Likely genotype(s) following the order of the listed genes for the parents:

    • Bb|Mm|Rr|Ss

  • Notes:

    • I initially did not know if the female was homozygous or heterozygous for the gray-based body color. Because all of the offspring were gray-based, this suggests that female #2 was homozygous for gray-based body color.

    • I initially did now know if the female carried the magenta gene or not. It seemed safe to assume that she didn’t because magenta looks to be an incompletely dominant gene and I could not find any signs that she expressed magenta.

    • European blau was a gene I only became aware of during Cross 5 but it seems to be important in these crosses. I’m not 100% convinced that it is European Blau but so far, the data seems consistent.

    • I used the female shown on the top right of the figure to backcross to Gandalf (Cross 8). She is also shown below. She was unique compared to her sisters because she had the largest, almost delta shaped tail. I wanted to see if any of the tail characteristics would transfer to the offspring and how that would interact with the magenta gene. In addition to modifying color, magenta also reduces fin size. I labeled this female as Cross 2 Female A (C2AF).

    • A YouTube video detailing this cross can be found here.
